Does anyone play Second Life here?

after reading the original story I got a free account and looked around a bit. Pretty incredible

I don't really know what Second Life is about, but I know that there is a big Second Life library.

Josh, I've just started to play. Downloaded and installed it the day before yesterday and spent some hours exploring it.

So...what is it exactly?

My understanding is that it is kind of like one of those massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) like World of Warcraft, except it focuses more on social interaction.

invictus
It's a multiplayer (mass multiplayer actually) virtual world where you can wander around, interact with people and do many things including entertainment, business, education, etc. It's very complicated and really a *huge world*.

Yes Josh, you don't need to take care of yourself and kill dragons, orcs etc like in Warcraft. This is a plain, "normal" world. Except you have many special abilities here like "flying". It focuses on social interaction, yes, but "business" and trade as well. Many people makes money selling the stuff they created in SL.

Participating in this thing seems like a great way to ensure that I never complete my dissertation. Maybe when I get tenure in 6-7 years I'll join up.

LOL right, it's really "time-consuming". I was just amazed to see how much this thing was look like an exact replica of the capitalist world. Big companies purchased land built their stores, showrooms etc. Even the BBC is said to have its own concert hall in SL.

I can't play, I don't hae the graphics boards needed. I tried anyway and it crashed out my computer. So I have a haracter stuck by a tree in the training areawhere I was redesining my avatar.

But from what I saw it was real cool. It has the most sophistocated character designer that I have run into.

Debra, it's been 3 weeks since I stepped in SecondLife and I can say it's really, really amazing. It's not a "game", it's just like "the matrix" as in the movie. That guys in Linden Labs had created a very impressive 3D "parallel world" where you can do almost anything you in your "First Life" (they call the "real life" like this.) For now, I'm member of five "clubs", one of them is an "Egyptology Group", another one is a "Books Club", yet another one is a "Vegetarians Group". I regularly visit the *huge* libraries; participate in really interesting discussions and conferences; I'm even considering to apply to a university (as I said, not a game, it's very serious) at SL

On the other ...

I not only play Second Life, I work for the company, Linden Lab.

Now that's a testimonial! Hehe.

I recently found out about Clipmarks and am enjoying "bridging realities" here — I've blogged a lot about my SL experiences. A lot of it is just like living my offline life, only with more flying and watermelons. http://torley.com if you're curious.

That's an inspiring review there Torley. You express a lot of thoughts I've been pondering too (the educational value, research angle, 'information management skills', ...)

I've checked Second Life out yesterday, and it's overwhelming, fascinating & enchanting.
Invictus has given me a nice introduction to it.

Welcome to clipmarks, Torley! I agree with Djiezes-- that was inspiring.

Welcome Torley!

Invictus: thanks for the recap on SL. I visited the site a couple of weeks ago and wasn't sure if it was like the Sims? So I stepped away without getting involved. I noticed you can use 'real money' in some aspects. Wasn't sure about that either. However, I like your explanation.

Yesterday we talked with Djiezes about using SecondLife to organize special "Clippers meetings" and virtual parties with music and chat, in one of those beautiful places. We both recalled you and your "Mojito night" idea We can also establish a "Clipmarkers Club" there and even rent a place.

But there are difficulties of course: system requirements. SL requires a good VGA card with updated drivers, a large memory and a fast CPU. (But I do fine with my comp I bought last year: P4 3 Ghz + 1 GB DDR RAM and a good old nVidia 128 MB simple VGA card.)

Any interest on this subject among the Clipiverse?

Aye, that sounds like a good idea — you know what, it seems like only a matter of time before there's more cross-activity between Second Life and Clipmarks. I know right now, gadgets created by SL Residents to post to blogs and straight to Flickr are becoming more popular. I wonder how clipping highlights from Second Life would work... hmmm!

(Clipiverse, I like that!)

...it's really "time-consuming".
Really, really time-consuming? I've been really busy lately. I don't know if I have time for SL..

Oh, and I read your last.fm note. The main feature of last.fm is scrobbling not really music streaming. Too bad it's not working well for you, Invictus.. Thanks, though, for waiting until I've read your note. That was extra, extra polite of you.

Okay, now I can delete my last.fm account. I don't care about "scrobbling" or whatever; I thought it was a customizable streaming service.

"Time consuming" character of SL depends on the user, actually. I usually get online and "park" my avatar to some place for earning money by "camping", while I do my other online or offline jobs. When I have free time, I keep on discovering SL.

Well my next computer is definitely going to have the boards I need to go back in. Since I am using a laptop right now there isn't anywhere to insert a board. I got their last newsletter and I really felt deprived that I couldn't go back in. Both I and a friend of mine in India signed up the same day. So I had someone to help cheer me up once we finally got back on line. I've had to settle for millsberry and the cocacola virtual worlds, but I think I'm the only one there over 40. And I bought virtual villagers which I suddenly wanted after I couldn't use secondlife.. But it's not the same.

Looks like this clip has already been a "historical document". I clipped it on October 17th and as you see it on the clip, that day there were 940 thousand members. Now after 2 months, it's 2,050,000.

btw, I hope "Clipmarks Group" members at SL do check group notices. We have a small "cliphouse" in SL and all clippers are welcome. Just drop in, check online members and meet there, have a drink, chat, help yourself.

We have 14 members now. With new people joining, I hope we can arrange a "New Year Party" there soon.

I am bummed. I downloaded the software and got in and then it went boom. Keeps telling me that Clipmarks is unavailable and so is my "Home." LOL

I downloaded drivers from SiS for my AGP but I have reluctance with installing because if something goes wrong.... let's just say, it's beyond my technological knowledge. Otherwise, I'd be there.... my name is Bella Gagliano. Soon as I am brave enough to try this driver update, I'll try SL again and see you in Clipmark ville

I kept trying and updated all my drivers as well as the latest update from Second Life. I got in quite well and then my Anti-virus knocked me out with a warning that a connection from Time-Warner (AOL?) inside Linden Labs was knocking on my backdoor with a trojan horse. Just peachy. Uninstalled and will have to try sometime when my computer is more up to date with hardware.

Have fun all! I surely feel left out, that's for sure.
