They are native to our area.
A friend of mine didn't even know she had been bit until an actual hole formed in her shin muscle. It was horrible. She was in the hospital for a few days. She must have been bitten while she was asleep.
I am not unusually afraid of spiders, but I kill all spiders in the house and keep moth balls in areas where I store things. Not sense in courting tragedy.

Snopes has this listed as "undetermined."

I was bit by one on my foot in 1979. After a trip to the hospital with no improvement, it kept getting bigger and more painful. On the 8th day, a woman, whom I had never seen before, came to my door. She poured "anointed oil" in her hand, covered the wound and prayed for a healing. The pain stopped immediately and I was back at work the next day! The wound has left a scar, but it could have been much worse. That experience made me a true believer in the power of prayer.

We just took out a nest on the porch. We see them all the time.

Here in Southeast Missouri, its not unusual when someone is bitten, that they end up in surgery getting skin grafts to cover the hole that it leaves--immediate treatment by a hospital can sometimes stop the poison before it goes as far as it did on this guy's thumb. But I knew a friend that got bit on his thigh--ended up losing some quadricep muscle and had to have a skin graft--because he put on a pair of sweat pants--stored for the summer--when the first cold day of fall came along without turning them inside out and shaking them. We moved into a house that had been used as a vacation home for 5 years--only in the summertime--had a pest control guy come because we kept finding shed spi...

Someone I know was bitten in the middle of his back while napping on his couch. He went to the hospital fairly quickly, and they were able to stop it before it got too far -- but it left a hole in his back about the size of a quarter,

This was several years back, in the NW Chicago suburbs.

Who takes pictures knowing something is wrong and doesn't have something done about it?

Maybe the cure was the healing oil.

I can't believe I just found this. I am home recovering from this same thing. I was bitten on the toe about three weeks ago now. Things progressed just as described. I was in the hospital for a week and thus far have had one surgery. All I can say is "THE PAIN"!
I haven't missed work on my job in thirteen years. They say I will be back in about a month or two. Unreal! No, surreal to me.
At least they saved my foot. Thanks for the info. Not for the shock value, but for the urgent information that others may need to know. By the time I went to the ER...they weren't worried about saving my foot and leg...they were initially worried about saving my life. That's how bad this can be.
