Although veterinarians are recognized as a common profession, most people would be surprised that there are so few vets in the USA. The American Veterinary Medical Association has about 78,000 members.

Yet veterinarians and others say shortages are real concerns in fields such as farming and industry, and the issue is important because veterinarians play a $3.3 billion role in New England’s economy, according to a recent study from the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute. The study’s authors estimate New England could face a shortfall of about 658 veterinarians by 2014.
