Governor Reagan overrode Chancellor Heyns' May 6, 1969 promise that nothing would be done without warning, and on Thursday, May 15, 1969 at 4:45 am, he sent 250 California Highway Patrol and Berkeley police officers into People's Park. The officers cleared an 8-block area around the park while a large section of what had been planted was destroyed and an 8-foot tall perimeter chain-link wire fence was installed to keep people out and to prevent the planting of more trees, grass, flowers and shrubs. Beginning at noon, approximately 3,000 people appeared at nearby Sproul Plaza at U.C. Berkeley for a rally, the original purpose of which was to discuss the Arab-Israeli conflict. Several ... Thanks for this clip. I remember this and was saddened! "Power to the PEOPLE!" Wow, thanks for the clip, Righthand! I was there--originally, not to protest but to get a bag of grass (i admit it, gladly) but was swept up in the protest and ensuing police riot and got arrested, sent to Santa Rita Jail along with 500+ others in the so-called "Mass bust". They arrested the long haired postman on his rounds, several little old ladies who were shopping, etc. And me and two of my friends. In Jail, I talked with several more politically aware guys and the seeds were planted for the radical politcizing of my life. I never looked at America in the same way after that. We took beatings, were made to lay on the gravel for hours until after dark, no blankets, bare meta... We didn't find out that there was a death from a police gun until later but that really shook me up, too. Crazy times, those. I moved to Berkeley and became more involved up until my draft and refusal to serve in the military I posted this as "where it all began". I didn't know about this. It's being kinda wiped from the American memory. It strikes me that this was out and out fascism. That Reagan felt able to say what is reported proves that America had lost its way. It's no wonder that he would become the president after getting away with this- just like Hither, Mussolini and the rest - but I don't remember their leaving such a record of their fascism. Yea, Papa, those were the days. They did the same kinda crap in DC several times to us. I remember the last protest I was involved in. It was in Miami and the Vietnam Vet's Against the War, of which myself and several friends from Key West belonged (still do), and the Miami pigs busted heads and loaded a paddy wagon (or five) and proceeded to treat us like animals. I mean there were guys in wheelchairs and on crutches, still bandaged up and limpin'. It didn't matter to them. A few of them got fired but were rehired by the Miami-Dade Sheriffs Dept. As far as the clip goes I don't think it was THE place where it all started but it was a major battle in the war for peace. |
