schreibe says: OK ... all you Americhristians......stand up and make a fool of yourselves, and this country one more time! I don't buy any of it Schribe. And I don't believe the Republican part has any monopoly on moral values. I'm a liberal. I'm a Christian and I didn't vote for George W. Bush. The "religious" take-over of the Republican party didn't happen overnight. A series of Supreme court decisions angered religious conservatives and convinced them that they had to get political too. So victory and success, money and access to the White House and the media was all the proof they needed of God's approval and blessing. and anyone who disagreed was a a liberal, or an atheist. But I believe in order to reclaim the moral high ground the Dems must take back the language of passion and moral conviction from... But I believe in order to reclaim the moral high ground the Dems must take back the language of passion and moral conviction from the religious right.Damn right. But your task is a big one. It is to educate that the religious right never occupied the moral "high" ground in the first place. But how do you tell a Christian that gays should have the same rights as everyone else, when their god says its an abomination? Premarital sex, birth control, AIDS reducing contraceptives, scientific research, even public education.. all have religious connotations that disagree with secular equality and fairness. Wouldn't you in essence be saying that their god is morally wrong, or... Thank you for your encouragement Aces, I appreciate that, but I have to say we disagree about the part that these are purely secular values because I feel that you are just seeing it through your eyes and also the Christian right's eyes and we have had this debate before. If you want to call the Social Gospel meaningless because it is not the Christian right's particular interpretation of Scripture, then be my guest and call it secular only, but any interest in debating that issue actually is counter-productive for me. MY particular bin of disbelief is much too precious for me to waste on that because I save that for homophobia, empire, and injustice, and inequality. Now, as to your ... I sort of 'skimmed" through both responses. Sorry, but I can't get into the details of the bible or the religious "rightness" or "wrongness" of the theories of the bible. I think I somehow know what is moral, and what is not moral. I'm not sure I need to get into all that retoric. All anyone needs to do is try real hard to live a good life and take care of those immediately around you. I'm real tired of the organized religion, and all the nonsense we have gone through in the past eight long years with this Bush character. I'm getting old (65 years worth), and this country's policies toward other countries and us "middle class" people in this country has been totally outrageous. Hopeful... check out this link! So much for Reagan http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=17808622&m=17808620 I'm real tired of the organized religion, and all the nonsense we have gone through in the past eight long years with this Bush character. IAnd so am I Schreibe. But this clip was about a segment of extremist fundamentalist relgion, their rise to power, and their affliation with the conservative right. My comments were in that context, and I thought I pointed out what I believe to be "moral values", and how we can reclaim those particular values and get back to the great nation we are. Thanks for the NPR link, schreibe. I just finished listening to the interview and am appalled by what I learned. Maybe I didn't read enough of your clip. I just get real tired of all the words. It is obvious to me that all the Bush guys were just using religion for their own political purposes. Is old stuff. Bush and Bushes Brain (Rove) just used religion and so called moral values to win elections. Is very cynical. People were stupid to go along with it! Me too "gingembre".... I think we should all read the book and start to understand just what "dups" we are being taken for. The great "Free Enterprise" system...is free and unregulated as much as the rich and powerful want it to be. For the most part it is completely regulated in favor of the rich and powerful! So much for us "middling class folks"! Here's another interesting link,... called "Gotcha Capitalism" http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18212223&ft=1&f=1057 Ginbembre or Schreibe, either of you may be interested in reading this book: http://www.amazon.com/God-Their-Side-George-Christian/dp/159558031X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200968494&sr=8-1 As the title says, it is a fascination and shocking tale of religious fundamentalist incursions into the soul of American democracy. And this is off subject on this clip but here is another good book: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Democracy-Money-Can-Buy/dp/0452285674/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200968947&sr=1-1 Okay, I listened to the Gotcha Capitalism interview, schreibe and had my suspicions about hidden fees confirmed. It would be very interesting to learn more about the subject by reading this book, too, even though it is all very discouraging and maddening at the same time. Debbyski, the reviews on Amazon for With God on Their Side: George W. Bush and the Christian Right and those for The Best Democracy Money Can Buy really make me want to read both books. Thanks for the links. I've read both Gingembre and highly recommend them. |
