Evidence came in the form of emissions from <A href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16293-megamaser-is-most-distant-sign-of-cosmic-water.html">water masers</A> around a quasar at the center of the galaxy. Detection at such a large distance was made possible by a closer, intervening galaxy which acted as a <A href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_lens">gravitational lens</A>.
