His educational and career achievements should be an encouragement to many others. He was dignified, astute, and diplomatic (at least in public) but he need never have disguised himself as a Republican then endorse Obama and his agenda.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Luther and Maud Powell, he was raised in the South Bronx.
