Lembit says:
It is one thing to use scripture as a moral guide to life's cunundrums, quite another to use it as a users manual for the Universe.

The age of the earth is another great example. In the bible, the family line from Christ to Adam is given. Using this information, people have calculated the age of earth to be some where around 5 to 6 thousand years old. There is over whelming evidence that the earth is far older than this. (4.5 billion years old).
Not only do people say the bible is infallible, the bible itself says it it infallible. If the bible itself states that the bible is the inerrant truth, the moment you prove any single fact in the bible to be wrong, it makes the bible not what it professes to be, the Word OF God. There is no way to get around this fact!!

Yes, one could still use the bible as a self help...

If God gave us the ability to see, hear, touch, spell, think etc... and then we use these things to investigate the universe that he created and we find in this investigation, truths about that creation that contradict the writings beleived to be the word of God, then one of two things has to be true.

The writing believed to be the Word of God are in fact not the Word of God.

OR

The writings are in in fact the Word of God and God has Lied to us in his Word or He has created the Universe such that when investigated by us, it would give evidence that contradicts his Word which again is effectively lying.

You're my hero. I don't "follow" anyone on these clipmark things. But you'd be the first if I did. Your thoughts are clear and well said. Keep up the good.

People have lost the true nature of mythology. Most now think "myth"="lie". That is not so. A mythology is a set of cultural and spiritual truths that seel to establish a culture's place in the cosmos. It has nothing to do with the physical universe. This is why different cultures can have differing mythologies yet all touch spiritual truths. Read some joseph Campbell. It's turtles all the way down.

You are exactly right. Joseph Campbell is a great source on mythology, and generally concludes as you do. And he shows the deep commonalities between all!

The Hero with a Thousand Faces is basically dedicated to that. Lot's of great stories. But "Truths" in that cultural sense are not to be considered "truth", as in, fact.

And in that sense, they 'are' lies, in that the actual events didn't really happen. Unfortunately many devoutly religious people can't fathom that their myths are not fact!

Therein lies the dangers of faith, and credulity. Every now and then I remind people that 9/11 was a "faith bas...

Who thinks the 6,000 year thing is real?
Who and how many have YOU been led to believe actually believe that.
That is some fringe thing.
You sure go to a lot of energy to condemn a wide swath with the stubborn beliefs of a small element.
