He had been held in isolation since August 8, nearly four months earlier. He was dehydrated and in need of regular hook-ups to an intravenous drip. His feet were swollen. He was urinating on himself. The pattern was always the same: 20-hour interrogation sessions, followed by four hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation appears as a central theme, along with stress positions and constant humiliation, including sexual humiliation. These techniques were supplemented by the use of water, regular bouts of dehydration, the use of IV tubes, loud noise, nudity, female contact, pin-ups. An interrogator even tied a leash to him, led him around the room and forced him to perform a series of dog tricks. He was forced to wear a woman's bra and a thong was placed on his head. Author Philippe Sands is a UK Queen's Council barbarous, disgusting, vile, there is not a word to adequately describe such behavior. I find it difficult see anything here about which I as a US citizen should hold my head up and be proud about. These crimes are enacted in my name and I find them beyond disgusting. Amen, BB. Man's inhumanity to man. I didn't want to believe that it was this bad. I'm one of those whimps that wouldn't watch Saddam's beheading or watch 24 on TV. Is the showing of a pornography (violence) TV program like 24 a coincidence with America's coming out as the prime torturer along with Israel. Its involvement with the fascist murdering regimes of Latin America are now well documented. Yet my thoughts are for the camp guards, the individual torturers. The tortured and his immediate family suffer but somehow survive. Not so with the torturer. It's something like the returning Vietnam Vets. Having sacrificed all they were then sold out by an ungrateful American. The brutalised cannot forget ...  |
