ouyangwulong says: It startles me how quickly these stories are coming. With news like this, it is impossible to not further explore the conflict between modern society and fundamentalist faith. I believe that the inevitable progress of society, and the fundamentalist rejection of modernism and defiance of that progress can only end in some major sort of spiritual collapse. The fact that, in these times, so many feel so violently uncomfortable with progress and the future strikes me as the defining conflict of our times. What is bring about such a large scale rejection of modernity? Why is progress so often equated with sin? The pat answers that we always offer somehow ring hollow. They haven't been able to reconcile this conflict, and neither sides seems to address the humanity of the other. If we continue down this divisive path, there is no future for spirituality in America. I should add that my questions about fundamentalism, begining with Intelligence vs. Fundamentalism, are not directed strictly at Christianity or Islam. I don't believe that there is something inherent in either of these religions that promotes fundamentalism, and fundamentalist ideology can be identified in nearly all corners of the world, and in all types of people. For those, such as myself who wondered what came after "Post-Modernism" it would appear that the answer is now "Anti-Modernism." The rising tide that rejects modernity is a social phenomenon that must be considered independent of the traditional conflicts between athei... I'm having hard time believing this is coming out of United States of America. Honestly, I agree. I was born and raised in America, and I have to admit, I like th place. So when I see crazy shit like this it really worries me. I'm a pretty jaded person when it comes to crazy religious nuts. I study terrorists who blow up innocent women and children. (Though it should be noted that, contrary to popular assertion, Islamic terrorists do not send their children as suicide bombers.) That said, I was nevertheless shocked to see that these people would abandon their own children to protect their personal salvation. This kind of spiritual greed is deeply unsettling to me, and runs counter to all my experiences. But does Don King beg the question: Only in America? The fact is... So why haven't they cracked down on the polygamous sects thats what I want to know. Wait a sec though - renegade x-mormon youth gangs roaming the American South West?...thats just waiting to be a gritty independent film! Okay media exploitation aside - I wonder at what point this will become a national issue. I wonder at what point this will become a national issue. That is a VERY good question! Great Observations! ----------------------- What is more, the typical constructivist argument that these trends are all the result of power ploys by entrenched elites seem entirely too shallow. Certainly the wealthy and powerful have roles to play, but I think it would be simple-minded to give them all the credit. ----------------------- I've been guilty of emphasizing this this too much at times. |
