This verse is regarded by most commentators on the Koran as the very first to be revealed in relation to warfare and thus makes absolutely clear two fundamental principles: first, that Muslims are to fight only in self-defense of all believers and their places of worship. The purpose of warfare is to establish peace, and this peace is, evidently, supposed to govern relations between all believers. All the verses of the Koran cited by "jihadists" in their vain effort to justify the indiscriminate murder of non-Muslims are to be seen in the light of these two fundamental principles.

In this case, as in so many other instances, one sees the way in which the Koranic teaching is a synthesis of the legal aspect of Jewish scripture and the spiritual aspect of the Christic message.
