Actually they did not, the Hebrews and others in ancient times practiced religious inspired warfare as well. It was the Catholic Church that cloaked it inside th cocoon of "Just War".

I'm not sure of every religion, but at least Japan also has a national religion 'Shinto' and some of the people (not including me lol) is so fundamentalism...
