Experts met this week in Cairo to address the piracy issue but failed to come up with any plausible answer.

The obvious solution is to bring a conclusion to Somalia's lawlessness. They have been without a legitimate government since the 1990s. This lack of a lawful leadership has allowed rebels to spread out onto the waterways and has threatened every ship that dares pass along the east coast of Africa.

Sending foreign military ships has not curbed this activity, it is merely another band-aid 'solution' to a very serious and dangerous problem.

When the piracy got bigger, reports were saying that the piracy was in retaliation for the mess left behind by mining companies.
A lot of the lawlessness was caused by the mining companies causing trouble so that they could help the new govt and mine their raw materials.

Since the Somali government collapsed in 1991, the citizens have only illegal activities to help sustain them. When they turned to piracy they hit on a lucrative source of income because the victims are giving in to their demands.

Now they have gotten bolder and increased their operations. As a result shipping owners are rerouting their cargo which increases the cost of shipping and the rest of the world is paying in higher prices and delayed delivery.

This is another case where the world does nothing until it is too late. Why is that that only when a countries internal problems escalate to create financial problems for the world does the world decide to react?
