There is nothing inherently repressive or oppressive about polygyny (one man having more than one wife), or polyandry (one woman having more than one husband.) It's the religious memes floating around in their adherents heads (or maybe they're just taking their Bible literally) that's the apparent problem. That authorities and the public often look the other way or tacitly sanction these excesses is due to the fact the major religions share the same memes as do the so called cults.

I don't think homeschooling in the US is the first step to polygamy. Cults such as the one operating in Castleconnell, Ireland, The Children of God, (in which orgies and sex between adults and children occurred), and the cult in Texas are much more likely to become a infused with polygamists.

Homeschooling in the U.S. usually occurs within one family, administered by a parent to his or her own children.

I was just reading that in Britain, husbands with multiple wives have been given the go-ahead to claim extra welfare benefits (following a year-long Government review), The Sunday Telegraph - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=EXB4XMISPSL1VQFIQMGSFFWAVCBQWIV0?xml=/news/2008/02/03/nbenefit103.xml

I appreciate you asking if this can be true?

No, not at the site in TX. Local townspeople were upset about FLDS moving to their area, but it seems that they were tolerated as they stayed
to themselves, FLDS reps bought supplies in towns far away to avoid nearby social connections. They have their own law within the compound, but it is not sanctioned by the USA or Texas.

BTW, this group moved to TX when their leader, Warren Jeffs, was being investigated in Utah for underage rapes & quasi marriages for these children. They hightailed it out of Utah and moved to an obscure area of Texas with a low population density of independent souls who live best by living their own lives. This FLDS gro...

Extraordinary. Never even heard of this. Could not have forgotten it - if true. So I Googled it. Three hits but what hits. Two from the same source of very dubious pedigree.

The shocking story of a religious cult which, it is claimed, set up base in the Castleconnell area in the 1990s, is detailed in a new book published by Harper Collins.

I wasn't even going to sign in today ... but leave it to righthand to clip something I had to comment on!

I homeschooled my youngest daughter. We are not part of any cult. I made the decision to homeschool her when we moved back here to Florida.

Within the first few months after moving here there were several events here that made me fear for my daughter's safety in the public school system. There was a junior high student arrested for placing rat poison in the taco sauce at his school. Thirteen students became ill and had to be treated. There have been so many murders of students by other students nationwide ... all of which have been in the news. There was also a young girl here that w...

Now are you not glad you signed in. you've had the opportunity to put the good side of home-schooling and I hope the majority.

I hadn't know there was any bad side to home-schooling. All new to me. Home-schooling is virtually unknown in Ireland. It came as a bit of a shock to learn that there was any cult connections. I did put a question mark in the title.

I'm certainly better informed as I hope others are too. Different child abuse events recently have left me punch drunk and prepared to view anything as plausible. Events in Austria and Israel recently leave my slee...

"I hadn't know there was any bad side to home-schooling."

While many home schooled kids are excellent scholars, in our area, "home schooling" often amounts to legal truancy. The parents may be illiterate, drug users, or the children undisciplined making any education at home unlikely.

This is allowed to continue largely because of budgetary concerns by both local child protection agencies and the school districts. The former has a heavy burden of proof the children are in danger which makes their work more laborious (The courts protect parental rights over childrens' rights in these cases.) and the latter can only see extra costs of remedial teaching and more disciplinary actions by having these children in school.

One last comment on polygny. In most polygnous societies, the first wife ranks above the rest while each subsequent wife serves as another of her assistants. In which case, if a man can afford a second wife, his first wife will generally petition him to get another.... and another.... Many anthropologists think this is how the custom got started as women in these societies have large work loads.

It is common for wives to bicker among themselves. Also, they can collectively put considerable pressure on their common husband. Where the custom wanes it is usually the men who are the more content to see it go. Less hassles.

In most polygnous societies, their ways have evolved over centuries ...
