I'm surprised this even reached the foreign news media because it is not an uncommon practice in parts of South Africa, and has been for centuries.

Wow. I have a lot to learn about South Africa. I've been under the impression for years that they were a fairly civilized nation, more-or-less free from old-fashioned superstition. I guess I don't know as much about your nation as I should.

Well, that is how the "witches" of Salem, MA were murdered...how the whole panic started...but it was continued by the mobbing townspeople.

Young teens' unconscious minds still bleed over into their conscious mind. When they do weird things, they have to blame someone, so they pick older women who are "different" or are alone with no family or status.

That's really interesting Alan. Tks. I read somewhere that the Catholic Inquisition over several centuries drowned and burned to death approximately 14 million people throughout Europe whom they accused of witchcraft.

Burning of witches in South Africa is common, particularly among the Venda people. If a person is killed by lightning or is burned to death in a hut that has been struck by lightning, then a witch hunt begins. They believe this is the work of witches.

Muti (pronounced: mootie = medicine) murders are very common as well, particularly children are singled out as the victims. Body parts are removed to make 'potent' medicine as they believe the flesh is imbued with special p...

That is a made-up number; the mythical "9 million witches" is incorrect. Actual records show that approximately 40/60,000 were killed as condemned witches. A good percentage of those were Christians who were falsely accused, and/or healers who were turned in by rivals.

Not that it makes it right, but current research shows that it was hardly the widespread, focused Church massacre that was in previous reports.

Thanks for the correction WT. That is a much more believable number. I remember being stunned at the 14 million estimate. Just goes to show, we can't believe everything we read. Even so, it's 60 000 too many.

Here's an excellent source that details those stats:

That was a fascinating and informative read. It contradicts everything I've read to date, but now I know why. Thanks WT - most appreciated.
