Many of us would have a hard time getting a job because of some kind of similar addition. George Bush got a big time job and proceeded to lead the United States of America...... simply amazing!

Not really, these days. Mostly just if you were insecure about your recovery yourself.
I think most people, in a job interview, mentioning they'd arrested an active alcohol addiction (quit drinking) 13 yrs. earlier might just as likely have the advantage.
Plenty of ways to get at Bush, but I question whether demeaning millions of people in successful recovery is the way to do it.

I guess I just don't like the guy. I can accept a youthful exuberance in the area of booz and drugs, but seems like 40 years old is beyond youth. Also, all his business failings, and his being bailed out of all these things by family ties..etc. I guess I just don't respect the idea that somehow he was ever qualified to lead this country. I think it takes more than a declation of faith to establish yourself as a man of character.

President of the United States should demand a little more qualification than Bush ever had! I,m not necessarily knocking him for his addiciton (bin there done that), ..... I am knocking him for somehow or other (mostly because of Karl Rove's down and dirty ta...

Check out this link, for a 30 minute interview on NPR dealing with the Bush Presidency, and Legacy, and Tragedy. Sorry, but Bush and company, has affected so many peoples lives negatively in the past seven years that I can't give the guy a pass on any issue! He should never have gotten in the driver's seat!

Agree with davboz. Beating addiction to the alcohol drug is a sign of strength in anyone, and the millions on the road to recovery can take heart. Those in denial of their problem can have a look at themselves and their drinking buddies and maybe get tough enough to see they have a
big job to do.

But did he really beat it or merely became a dry drunk?

@ ratilfar: there are many who would agree ( I have just clipped an article on this possibility). On the other hand, a personality associated with grandiosity, impetuoisity, all or nothing thinking, simplistic polarisation, dithering, self-righteousness etc. is not one necessarily confined to drunks. In any case, think that davboz is right to point out that an ad hominem attack on the President is probably not the most efficient way of criticising what is a wider structural issue. Also agree with schreibe, btw: I just don't like the guy.

The story is that Laura refused to sleep with him anymore unless he quit drinking. If you wanna say that gave him religion, then fine.
