I read recently that 90% of major cities' water systems have measurable amounts of antidepressants and hormones (mostly estrogen & progesterone) from flushed old meds. This is also a source for environmental antibiotics, which contributes to the rise of resistant strains of bacteria.

My own doctor recently cut the number of my prescriptions from seven to three, and told me to bring my unused pills to his office and he would see that they were incinerated with medical waste. That's a better method of disposal.
