jatfla says: To some extent, he is correct. When all Western Civilization is not committed to defeating extremists, they will win; by inches or miles. What about the extremists IN western civilization like Ann Coulter and the other hate mongers of the extreme right. What we need is to send all of our extremists to fight all of their extremists in an extreme wrestling cage match with no holds barred. Then the rest of us can go back to shopping as Bush asked us to. Al Queda must really get a good laugh and a sense of eventual victory when reading childish nonsense such as your comment, Greenman Ann Coulter.... Such a threat! Dude, you're hilarious. Actually, this election was a lose for the terrorists, or at least some of them. War is nothing more than terrorism on a grand scale. It is a neutral-to-good term for the same actions. With warhawks being kicked out of Congress, we can actually say that some terrorists have been taken out of power, and in fact terrorism is losing. More hilarity. Such childish responses only make conservativism look like the ideology of child-like people. Internal al-Qaeda documents generally suggest they want the Republicans to remain in power. The war in Iraq has been good P.R. (and has provided a massive recruiting windfall) for al-Qaeda. You may well think this is a crazy statement, and I wouldn't really blame you for thinking that, but I found it reliably supported in an article in the New York Review of Books a few years ago, and I believe it (I don't think the article is available online). The point, though, is that al-Qaeda's primary purpose has always been to lure the U.S. into an unwinnable and long-lasting war against guerrilla fighters in a Muslim country, which would inflame worldwide Islamic sentiment against Americans. Simple-... Thanks for the links, enbar. One additional piece of information is this interview with Ron Suskind, who says that the CIA had concluded that Osama Bin Laden had deliberately timed the release of one of his audio messages the week before the 2004 election to get Bush elected. I agree with Enbar and Josh. From the 911 commission report, Bin Laden was truly upset when the war in Afghanistan was over; he had shown the world that they were truly a David/Goliath situation with Russia. jklugman, thanks for that -- i've added it to the jetpak list. The conflict in Afghanistan is not over yet. We still have troops over there, and conditions have not improved much; we only assume that it's over and/or going well because the mainstream media is ignoring it. No, in fact, it's getting way worse. The Taliban are back in power in large parts of the country, and poppy-growing is the number one economic activity again. Oh, I totally agree; I was speaking of the Soviet Union/Afghanistan conflict. If having the GOP in charge and the US in Iraq is so good for the terrorists, why is al Qaeda calling for us to pull out now? Dude ... al-Qaeda is messing with your head, man. So, you think al Qaeda wants us to stay in Iraq? Check out the latest threat...They're giving us a month to get out. Will the US be as the Soviet Union in Afghanistan? Will we leave them all (Afgan. and Iraq) high and dry with our reputation in tatters? (Don't give me that stuff about it already being in tatters.) The line has been drawn in the sand (hmmm...was that the Alamo?) and the US needs to decide very quickly whether to cut and run or stand firm and get the Iraqi government free from the fear of Al Qaeda, and if necessary, Iran. If we leave now, we will be a thousand times worse off than before and the other Middle Eastern countries will fall to the domination of the likes of Hezbollah, Hamas, Al-Qaeda, Al-Aksa (sp) Brigade, e... We should let troops stay in Iraq IF our presence is doing more good than harm, have clear goals to pursue, and have a good chance of achieving those goals. Unfortunately I just do not see a good case for any of those things being true. Whatever Al Qaeda says should have little to no role in our decision to stay or leave Iraq. jk...I agree with you AND I believe that our troops are doing MUCH good. Regarding what Al Qaeda says....I believe they mean every murderous word they say, but I'm more concerned with what they *do*! As far as al-Qaeda goes, I'm no expert, but my sense is that they're concerned mainly with their public image in the Muslim world. If we stay in Iraq, it's good for them -- they want to convince the Muslim world that we are interested in dominating the region for its oil and for Israel's benefit. If we stay there and the chaos and violence continue to get worse as they have been, that's also good for al-Qaeda, because it makes it easier to blame Iraq's situation on the U.S. and to sell their picture of an America that hates Muslims and has no qualms about destroying Islamic life and society. On the other hand, if we leave, they can claim they defeated us. Personally, I don't see any g... The best way to defeat them is to be unlike them. They do evil and front it with crafted appearance designed to appeal to like minds. We should do the right thing without concern for appearance and opinion. Civilization is squandering its strength, power, and advantage. Power has too often been wielded when the wicked possessed it, and now the good--relatively speaking--are too timid. A serious concerted effort could crush this menace. A serious concerted effort could crush this menace. You're probably right, but the real question is what kind of effort? Bullets and bombs don't seem to be doing the trick. Whew! I'm glad you weren't serious about quitting as stated elsewhere. I was just giving you some honest feedback, you know I get plenty of it. = = = = All the tools need to be considered but chiefly what is needed is seriousness, determination, fearlessness, end to PC silliness, and disregard for the opinion of the press. @enbar - I disagree with your sentiment regarding lack of results using weapons. It's not that it doesn't work - we're NOT fighting is where the problem is. If anyone should take credit for the Democrats win - it should be the mass media... al qaeda's comments are pretty much wishful thinking, nothing more. In Spain - clearly they used terrorism to augment election situation... but if they tried the same in the US - it'd only backfire, since most US public would take a totally opposite response to a terrorist attack and they know it. We're not making headway in Iraq for fairly obvious by now reasons, same exact problem in Afghanistan. bin laden may have had self-grandizing thoughts abo... Personally, I think the recipe for success is painting all Muslims and Arabs as radical terrorists, bombing relentlessly to incur as much collateral damage as possible in all Muslim countries, locking up all Muslims in America in concentration camps, taking away all the oil in the Middle East, do whatever we can to prevent the peaceful Palestinians from achieving peace with those evil Israelis, GWB imposing a dictatorial regime and putting on hold this democracy experiment, torture of all Muslim leaders and clerics, all with the help of Osama Bin Laden. trying to add to the humor element, willhelm? Whew! I'm glad you weren't serious about quitting as stated elsewhere.I'm glad too. When the left perceives it as my view anyway. I might as well indulge. Consider it my Christmas present to the left. Here's to a Merry Christmas and the hope of everyone that 2007 is a much more peaceful year. I was just about to explain exactly tthat to Mr Sage, as I thought you had exited. Glad you beat me to it. Disclaimer: This is just my rather uneducated opinion. First, as to Congress, I'm pretty sure they're -all- corrupt, be it Republican or Democrat, "conservative" or "liberal." My vote would be to kick them -all- out right now, and start over new, with no one allowed to be voted in who's ever been a part of Congress before, and who has no serious marks on their record. Second, as to Iraq. Now, Ive only been here for a year, and only in my little corner of Iraq. However, I have the unique point of view of being here for half of one division's deployment, and half of a new division's deployment. It seems to -me- that one reason nothing significant has been accomplished in Iraq is the way troo... Cathal Drake said:Thanks for this, Cathal Drake. It confirms what my gut feeling has been all along. Good luck over there and stay safe. I think we should be here. I think we should rebuild and create and make peace. However, if the people who are in positions to make strategic level changes aren't willing to set aside their pride and make changes, then-we-should just get out.I wish the people who are in the positions to make change would listen to people like Cathal Drake. @debbyski - as you look at the daily carnage going on in Iraq, who perpetrates it and why - you can see that as much as Cathal Drake makes sense - simply listening to his sentiments and following them isn't going to yield what we aimed to achieve there. |
