I've questioned what "time" really is for a while. It's really interesting to think about--and a little scary, too.

Time exists when there are two independent objects that can be measured in relation to each other. Not necessarily physically by us in this dimension. If there is nothing to measure, there is no reason for time to exist on it's own.
It's hard to describe something, when you are inside it. It could also depend on the definition of existence. Perhaps we are standing on unyielding rock, beneath which time past remains pristine and irrevocable. Being able to accelerate time, but not reverse it. Sounds better than time being Money.

Maybe only I exist and everything else is a product of my imagination.

The map is not the territory, our model of the universe (the set of all present theories, including General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, etc) is NOT the universe, and so even if our current understanding of physics does not explain time yet, that does not mean that time does not exist.

Phenomenal comments above. I'm impressed. Yes, very interesting clip-it...it's got me procrastinating (wasting time) instead of working on a deadline article...cause' now I have to know what the "Planck Scale" is all about.

[Disclaimer: do not open that can of worms unless you've got some real "time" to cross reference the subject...and ponder...]

All seven of my brain cells conclude: everything in science is measureable...and mathematically formulated. Gravity is no different. Rates of movement and motion...and some sub-atomic particle interactions in relation to quantum feild theory...all have to factor in "time" principals that are real.

"From Brian Greene, one of the world's leading physicists and author the Pulitzer Prize finalist b>The Elegant Universe, comes a grand tour of the universe that makes us look at reality in a completely different way.

Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts.
Is space an entity?
Why does time have a direction?
Could the universe exist without space and time?
Can we travel to the past?
From Newton's unchanging realm in which space and time are absolute, to Einstein's fluid conception of spacetime, to quantum mechanics; entangled arena where vastly distant objects can instantaneously coordinate their behavior, Greene t...

I've seen The elegant Universe, and it takes us through the explanation of string theory well. I wondered how to imagine 11 Dimensions. A few weeks ago I 'Stumbled' on a way of describing 10 (See link) http://www.tenthdimension.com/medialinks.php
Time as we know it may depend on fundamental values which vary infinitely, between any number of dimensions only some of which produce a viable 'reality'. Whether Time exists is beside the point. What is important is that we learn to think beyond these four walls. As we do our description of reality is going to lead to a view of time in which existence is redefined. We talk about the past and the future, but always remain in the 'Now'. Our view of t...

Supports a belief I've had for years. Time is merely a man made linear construct existing only for the observer.

Qantum Theory has for a while now observed that sub-atomic particles move BACKWARDS and FORWARDS in time. So time is a construct that the conscious brain has developed to allow us to function in the chaos that is the cosmos... This begs the question: what is reality anyway?

Of course time exists, but it is relative. That there are massless particles at the quantum level, does not mean that mass doesn't exist. Assuming that at the singularity, there are no dimensions, we must also assume that at the singularity, there is no time. As there is no time, then the singularity "lasts" for an infinite amount of time. That is, it is omnipresent AND exists simultaneously with our physical reality produced by the Big Bang. A massless (and timeless) quantum particle, therefore, accesses the physical reality and the singularity, both present and omnipresent, appearing to us as paradoxical.

Now, if I could just get back on that diet to achieve masslessness, I could travel t...

maybe time is just another spatial dimension (as many say) and as imagination can picture it (i.g. the whole life of a tree or anything comprises the 'tree' etc), only we are not able to sense this dimension because our organs don't allow so. We still may be 'feeling' the 'tree' as a whole, but through our thought/conception. Is conception then maybe another (more complicated) organ? No idea... time will tell
