I would add: "The Iron Heel" by Jack London "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco any novel from Nathaniel Hawthorne "We" by Yevgeny Zamiatin ... actually, many more I only read 5 in the list Still have a lot of books to read And to me, I like "Les Misérables(The Miserable Ones)" by Victor Hugo, the beginning and the ending parts of his "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". Alexandre Dumas really told a good story in "The Count of Monte Cristo". Of cource what I like most are our Chinese novels. Would be very nice to read all of these. I like the suggestion by zepyrgong of adding Les Miserables. I have started reading it about 5 times but each time only get through the first 200 pages or so...maybe i need the clipped version The Lovely Bones by Alice SeboldI don't think this should be on this list. It seems misplaced, given the others. I second the Count of Monte Cristo. I read that in French. I'm sure it was probably the "Cliff Notes" version, because my French wasn't that good. Still, it was an excellent novel. We could kick off The Lovely Bones to make room for it. I'd add four more to the list: The Magus - John Fowles Midnight's Children - Salman Rushdie (Booker of Bookers) American Pastoral - Philip Roth A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens The Count of Monte Cristo is probably my favorite on the list posted. Also, as remarked above, I'm not sure either how The Lovely Bones made that list -- interesting read, but not quite all THAT. Oooh yes, my favorite book: The Lord of the Flies by William Golding. But I would definitely add some American classics to the list: The Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Beloved by Toni Morrison, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, and the Complete Poems of Frank O'Hara. When Les Miserables is just too long to commit to, The Hunckback of Notre Dame makes a nice substitute. I've only read 11 of those books on the list....I'd have added The Three Musketeers and Huckleberry Finn as well....there are so many more to add to the list... |
