I think we're still going "after Al-Qaida's leaders" and it's Congresses job to continue re-enforcing and building our military. I don't trust Obama to ever see an enemy of the US that he would be willing to confront. (As I type I hear the beautiful sound of an Air Force jet soaring overhead) The price paid to hear the sounds of jets over Iraq could have silenced all the sounds of hunger in the world. Bobby, nice sentiment. Not true, of course, but well meaning. What part is not true? It costs the UN's food aid organizaton, 25 US cents a day to feed a child. One minute of war in Iraq costs US $380,000. One day of war in Iraq would feed 6,000,000 children for a year. There are 800 million hungry in the world. Three-four months of war in Iraq would feed all the hungry in the world. Back on topic. I'm wondering if this blogger is suggesting that we should have gone to war with the Soviet Union. Do you really think, Bobby that the UN gives two cents about feeding hungry people around the world? Why yes, silly, I do. Otherwise I wouldn't have brought them up. Instead of a silly question, why don't you show how they do not care. That would be worthy of clippers time. OK, Bobby. Explain to me why the UN appoints countries like Zimbabwe and Libya to the Human Rights Council. Explain to me why the US give 3 times as much money to the UN Food Program as the entire EU combined. Why do the OPEC nations give about $50K/year to the UN program. The US cares about feeding the rest of the world. The folks from the UN who are on the ground in countries like Sudan do indeed care about feeding these people. The UN, as a body, is ineffective and corrupt. And by the way, the US seems to be feeding the world and running a war on two fronts. Regardless of where funding comes from you still haven't provided any proof that the United Nations Food Aid programme does not care or does not provide hunger relief. All you have provided is that you despise the organization. Additionally if there are 800 million hungry people then the world is not being fed. Statistics can be spun many ways. You can make your argument in absolute dollars others can make their arguments in per capita dollars. What is a truth is that the money spent in Iraq on a war built on a pack of lies would more than feed the world's hungry. Another truth is that the U.S. is building up a considerable debt that will hamper what the U.S. wants to do in the future, ... The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food aid branch of the United Nations, and the world's largest humanitarian agency. WFP provides food, on average, to 90 million people per year, 58 million of whom are children. From its headquarters in Rome and more than 80 country offices around the world, WFP works to help people who are unable to produce or obtain enough food for themselves and their families. Although their may be corruption in the U.N. [as there is in almost all government organizations just look at the corruption by the contractors the U.S. uses in Iraq] you can hardly say they the United Nations doesn't do anything. The organization’s administrative costs are only seven percen... Correction: Joseph Stiglitz |
