Think of the present day belief in satanic possession that exists 316 years after this hysteria overtook the town of Salem. There's a history lesson here, when you label a class of people as less than human or not human at all, ( witches, terrorists, slaves, natives, Jews, Arabs, etc.), it becomes easy for mobs, governments, religions, soldiers, to kill and torture said non-humans. Worked for Hitler,Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, and other infamous figures in history, and it seems to be working for the time being in the US of A.
