He probably couldn't think of anything else to do. Also while it seemed funny to see he waited, it wouldn't have been as funny as a donkey trying to climb out of a hole. As they demonstrate with people, donkeys can sometimes work out when they are wasting their time. Of course, I've never heard a donkey say that personally, but I'm not sure they need to.
