merrie says: A new study has found that the world could produce vast amounts of biodiesel fuel -- but is that desirable? Assuming that agronomists figure out better ways to plant and manage crops, say researchers at the University of Wisconsin's Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment, global biodiesel production could soar to 400 billion liters a year -- more than twice the amount of diesel fuel burned each year in the United States The push for biodiesel really worries me. Concerns: 1. Too many people in the world don't have enough to eat to use food crops for anything but food. 2. This could exacerbate the water crisis unless regions of the world with a lot of excess water are the only places where stuff is grown for fuel. 3. Bieodiesel still creates carbon emissions. Ethanol production is a pending disaster for the environment, as well. Wildlife habitat is being destroyed to plant palm trees in Indonesia, for example. We need to conserve on water as well. |
