Well.... Look at what we got here. Three people commenting on how patriotism is somehow detrimental to society, and using a quote from Leo Tolstoy of all people... come on give me a break. Being a patriot is not being brainwashed or NOT being a non-individual person or thinker. Nor is it about believing in a myth about some made up story about Washington or Lincoln or any other person you place in there. It is simply an understanding that the country you live in "x" country, should be respected, in a historic context, with all its ups and downs in the past. Also in a cultural and societal context, understanding each country has something to be proud of. That is an understanding of patriotism.

No, we're commenting on how misguided patriotism or false patriotism is detrimental to a society.

It's one thing to take pride in who you are and what you believe in. It's another altogether to think that yours is the only way, Joaaron.

Cracked me up, Toad! I can see that I'll have to be pulling to the right of the road soon, each time a gas tanker drives by.

The REAL Napster
I think the proper term for this article should ave been Nationalism. Paul Revere (among others) was a patriot, and does not fit into the descriptions given above. From Wikipedia:

Nationalism, in its broadest sense, is devotion to one nation's interests over those of all other nations.[1] The term can also refer to a doctrine[2] or political movement[3] that holds that a nation—usually defined in terms of ethnicity or culture—has the right to constitute an independent or autonomous political community based on a shared history and common destiny.[4][5] Extreme forms of nationalism, such as those propagated by fascist movements in the twentieth century, hold that nationality is the most ...

In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of the scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first. -- Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary"
