wildcat says: Persons who believe firmly in the inevitability of The Singularity might be surprised to learn that the default human society is the closed society, resistant to change. Most of them have never known anything but open societies, born of western civilization’s restless urge to expand intellectual horizons. They live in an exceptional time, in an exceptional society, yet somehow believe it to be the human default. That type of blindness comes from forgetting to study history. Excellent. How tiny we must be. Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence.
The Intelligent Universe (Ray Kurzweil, 2002) The logarithmic explosion of technology, driven by Molecular Nanotechnology and advanced AI, will surely enable the Singularity in much less than 100 years. (Current estimates cluster around 2030!) We need more time... but time and progress waits for no one. Editing out of perception certain aspects of reality which do not align to one's world view, is not a rare phenomenon. One's world view and belief system is a very powerful filter on perception. Yet, in promoting radical visions such as the singularity, overlooking the overwhelming and obvious obstacles might be helpful, perhaps even necessary. |
