I think the government should get out of health care altogether. They are the reason why is it so expensive now. Once they have complete control it will be an absolute disaster, as it is in other countries.

Smoke TNT - the United States is unusual for how little the government is involved in health care, yet we spend so much on it.[1]

I think health insurance is nothing but a band aid for what the real issue is. The real issue is the high cost of health care. Why does it cost so much?? Why should we be required to pay into this pot that we might not ever need to collect from? It makes a lot more since to combat the high prices, whatever is causing them, not create a socialist state where the burden will only be carried by the taxpayers.

Whatever solution we reach, I guarantee you it won't involve socialism. Medicare - a good, working model - utilizes private sector providers.
Smoke, read the article: we pay more for health care per capita than any nation on earth, yet rank 27th in quality of care delivered.
Time to realize, friends, that the system we have is among the worst in the developed world; 26 nations provide better service for less money.

If everyone is required to pay into the health insurance plan (or rather everyone who pays taxes), like what is happening in Mass., then isn't it socialism?

I've been told by my family it would not be good, and that all people would receive poor health care. But if it works for France, and it would get a close friend of mine who is not insured and she and her husband struggle just to make ends meet, then why not??? I have the care I need, as a veteran with permanent access to V.A. healthcare, but I'm sick of people needing a problem to be attended to and not getting that attention!! Especially if it's a family member or friend of mine!!!

Viewing this debate from outside the USA it appears that many Americans have an irrational fear/hate of the dreaded "socialist" word.

So ingrained is this fear/hate that they cavalierly brush aside any and all statistics that compare health care systems elsewhere. It certainly does appear that all those many years ago Senator Joseph McCarthy really really did get his message across so effectively that the irrational prejudices are passed on in their mother's milk.

Not at all. Socialism is government ownership of the means of production. In this case, government simply acts as a single entity for pooling our payments and negotiating prices and services with private healthcare providers. Government owns nothing. It is less like socialism than is your monthly water bill.

A single negotiator with healthcare providers means massive reduction in overhead for them (as the clip says, with our system, overhead is 13-16%; with Medicare, overhead is just 1.5%.) And, it means ...

Lavender - that's sure how it seems to me, too.
Socra - you hit the nail squarely on the head, there. "My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts."
Skwirl - hang on, friend, I'm so sorry you've gotten nailed by this mess. Could have been any of us.
