Aribeth says:
Partly because teenagers are still half children, and many children are just intrinsically cruel. Some torture nerds for the same reason they pull the legs off spiders. Before you develop a conscience, torture is amusing.Another reason kids persecute nerds is to make themselves feel better. But I think the main reason is that it's part of the mechanism of popularity. Popularity is only partially about individual attractiveness. It's much more about alliances. To become more popular, you need to be constantly doing things that bring you close to other popular people, and nothing brings people closer than a common enemy.

It's important for nerds to realize that school is not life. School is a strange, artificial thing, half sterile and half feral. It's all-encompassing, like life, but it isn't the real thing. It's only temporary, and if you look, you can see beyond it even while you're still in it.<<

Interesting read.Written by someone who was considered to be a "nerd" at school.

I was a popular nerd in school. All it took was having a friendly and helpful personality. Sure I got razzed quite a bit but I often found that those doing the razzing had much bigger personality problems than I and I felt sorry for them.
Since I had a sense of humor most of the razzing was laughed off and we all got on with life. There were a few just downright mean kids that I will never forgive and would probably shoot them if they ever came near me again.
Most of those types were hostile towards everyone tho and they probable ended up dead or in jail anyway.
I got stuffed in a locker once and even I thought it was funny.

I was a nerd but not popular. There was no such thing as a popular nerd in my school. And I have always had a friendly and helpful personality which only made things worse. In my school one had to be mean to survive.

Back then it was awful, but after I finished school I completely forgot about school years. When one is a teenager one tends to exaggerate I guess.

I am pleased about that. I hope when I am older that people will stop being bad to me because of my intelligence.

Thank you. I feel a little bit better already. It is nice to feel that someone out there does not laugh at me and poke with sticks.

People who focus on school and not popularity tend to age more slowly, and IMHO "popular" kids are doomed to believe that the teen years are all they have. Why? because it is true;D

Remember the song lyric, "...those were the best days of my life!" The popular kids' ability to function in the adult world is fated to be filled with maintaining this "popularity" through weird social machinations over the course of their somewhat dreary lives, ala Desperate Housewives. In a way, they are as doomed as Peter Pan.

In an interesting turn of social manipulations, Ugly Betty has been a hit (IMHO) mainly because it is based on the Cinderella archetype: smart...

Wow, n2. Does that mean if you are happy with your Self you do not need to worry about the scorn of the painted, hollow people, and maybe even feel a bit sorry for them?
