The commonest logical error is ad hominem. This is when a person rather than trying to engage in logical argument attacks the holder of an opinions with personalised abusive name calling and so on.

Appeal to authority as well abailart. Many people fall back onto the acceptance of authority - and the authority doesn't even have to rest in an individual. It can also rest in an idea, obligation, moral, etc. "Father is never wrong", "murder is never right", "god cannot be questioned", "children should always obey their parents" and so on.

So, I would put my vote on "appeal to authority" as the top leading cause of logical fallacy.

@Oortcloud. Wouldn't argue with that. Will keep it in mind when looking at comments! (though ad hominem is usually motivated by appeal to authority, daddy, dogma, etc it can also be motivated by ignorance, hatred, prejudice etc.)

Wildcat, the SGU is one of the podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis. It's funny, irrelevant, and keeps getting better as it goes along. Recommended.
