ericw says: Another celebrity coming out against Bush. Why does this seem to never do any good? It just seems that, no matter who it is, so long as they are in the film/entertainment industry, they will be written off as "leftist" members Hollywood and elitists. But I think when enough of anybody says something, there must be some truth in it. "But I think when enough of anybody says something, there must be some truth in it." And thus is clearly stated, the dilemma we face as pop culture and groupthink replace individuals thinking clearly and independently. Better rethink that, EW. I guess that it is too democratic of me to say that. But I find it hard to believe that you would disregard that basic tenet of democracy simply because you don't agree with the context in which I said it. Of course individuals thinking independently is not being replaced. But a couple of individual thinkers thinking quitely to themselves is not going to impeach the president. Unfortunately, in politics, it's proof in numbers. Look at Fox News. So you have been converted to a FoxNews fan as you noticed it surpass it's competition in popularity, then? For this matter (I must be sick, I should phone my doctor for a check-up) I have to say I agree with Godfrey. This is kind of dangerous thinking. Remember that a majority of German thought Hitler was a nice guy in 1933. Were there "some truth in it" ? And democracy would be be to say, if the majority thinks something, then we need to do that thing. But that doesn't mean that thing is "true" or even "right". I can still have my personal opinion and try to demonstate that the majority is wrong. Anyway, in this case I agree with Mr. Dreyfuss, but that's not the point OK, both of your statements about have "some truth in it" - that's all I originally said. That if enough people get behind something, there tends to be some truth in it. Not that it's right, not that it's wrong. But my original wording was too vague, too simple, and for that generalization I stand corrected. BTW Godrfey, I don't trust Fox News at all, but their ratings prove they must be doing something right. I should have said "If enough people get behind something, out of their own free will and only after objectively hearing all sides of a given issue, then the stance of the majority on that said issue must have some truth in it and should not be discounted" But this whole issue i... "My original point is that no matter how much Hollywood comes out and rallies anti-Bush sentiments, they never seem to make a dent. No matter how much press they get - good or bad. The affect almost seems the opposite." It's an excellent point....what I find most odd, is that this country is so fascinated with celebrities, we see magazine after magazine and hundreds of TV shows about everything a famous person wears, eats, who they are sleeping with, what they did before they were famous...and the general public want to be them, look like them, wear the same clothes, be as skinny and perfect as them- it's a nation obsessed!! BUT, if it comes to any celebrity coming out and actually having a... I totally forgot about Steisand. See - I guess we're on to something. What's strange is .... it doesn't even have to be anyone considered leftist to be ignored. Look at what happened when Bruce Springsteen gave the free concert for John Kerry. People came out in droves to see the show. And then voted for their candidate anyway. Celebrities can not sway a person's politics. A diet, or fashion choices, maybe. But not politiics. I'm starting to be convinced of this. As adamc said, breads and circuses. the celebrities are just part of the circus and people want/need to keep them there. http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/250B7402-BF2A-42A7-AA87-7FE1624A09F8/ Here's the problem. Idiocy is what people first notice. So if you then notice that the idiot has made a point with which you agree, it's a bit of an embarrassment, innit? Guillaume can attest to this. Well it shouldn't be. Hitler once said "I like sunny weather" I have to admit shamefully, I agree with Hitler (please keep the context of this last sentence If we're going to look to Richard Dreyfuss for advice, we ought to at least consider the facts. This is not the first time he has said this and I watch one of his speeches and he makes a good case. The question is not whether he is a celebrity or not, one should neither endorse an idea or dismiss it based on that alone, the question is whether what he says makes sense. And I believe it does.
