IMHO, Coltrane stands as an equal or greater to any acclaimed musician ever to write for any insturment or group, or perform on any instrument in any musical period or discipline. More than just a saxophonist, he was an extemporaneous composer of the highest outcome, explorer and guiding light; an inspiration. His knowledge of musical theory and use of harmonies was second to none. His expressiveness in performance was Shakespearian. His work with the finest in the field elevated their output far beyond what they would have achieved without the experience of working him.
