However, it's not fair to judge a person who lived over 200 yrs. ago by our current ethical and cultural standards. Thanks, largely to Great Britain and the United States, slavery became an unthinkable evil. Nearly all civilizations have utilized slavery since time immemorial. Some still do; it just looks different.

I'm curious. How do they *know* that 'It was designed so Washington's guests would not see slaves as they slipped in and out of the main house."? That's odd. Most prominent Americans (or any who could afford it) owned slaves.
