There's the potential that in the time it would take to get the combined company running efficiently, Google and Microsoft would stick to their guns, pick up their game up and leave Yahol in the dust.

Though Yahol Instant Messenger would be huge.

AOL for sure needs something like this. They are running short of ideas and are almost every time behind everybody in innovation and design. What I like though is, AOL always try hard. Right now they are undergoing a big change in their organization. May be all they need now is a good partner.
