Actually, all that we want is free exercise. I don't care what a persons personal beliefs are as long as they understand the concept of church-state separation. The government of the United States is supposed to be secular - I'd like to keep it that way. Separation of religion and state is accepted as a matter of course in Japan, as the relationship between the Prime minister and Yasukuni Shrine is controversial. The 1st Amendment protects churches, synagogues and mosques from interference by the government. It does not protect the government from the influence of religious people. What a terrible misunderstanding of the concept of Church and State separation. First, Separation of Church and State was a Christian Concept before it was an American concept. Second, believing that the government is supposed to be secular is beyond rationale. I can't begin to understand where that misguided idea comes from. We in the US have freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. There is nothing that in our founding or subsequent existence that suggests the US is a secular nation. Third, To even suggest this is a secular nation dispells the legitamacy of Church and State separation. The state itself in America does not put itself above religion. That is why ... From http://www.earlyamerica.com/review/summer97/secular.html The most convincing evidence that our government did not ground itself upon Christianity comes from the very document that defines it-- the United States Constitution. If indeed our Framers had aimed to found a Christian republic, it would seem highly unlikely that they would have forgotten to leave out their Christian intentions in the Supreme law of the land. In fact, nowhere in the Constitution do we have a single mention of Christianity, God, Jesus, or any Supreme Being. There occurs only two references to religion and they both use exclusionary wording. The 1st Amendment's says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an es... 1st treaties are conciliatory agreements with other nations, they are not anything else. 2nd the Thomas Jefferson letter to Danbury Church makes my point. It is your understanding of separation that is subjective reasoning and prevents you from understanding the concept. It is quite simple. If by your understanding, separation means secular, then they are not separated, they are opposed. Your agenda is getting in the way of the facts. I understood this even when I did not believe in God. You should read and understand other people's comments before you comment yourself. It displays such a lack of open-mindedness and respect when you do not. Separation of church and state - it's even in the Bible so there are no excuses. Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s: Keep politics separate from certain other fields, such as religion. This is part of a saying of Jesus in the Gospels; the full version is “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s. Source: The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy exactly. That was on of my points. Did you read my comment? However, I still assume you do not know what separation of Church and State means. It does not mean The US is a secular nation. You are grossly misunderstanding the concept. You are grossly misunderstanding the concept. No I'm not. Study Guide: Separation of Church and State Study Guide: "Original Intent" Study Guide: Quotes in General Yes you are. You're inability to admit you're wrong is not my problem. The United States of America is not and never has been a "Christian Nation" - deal with it and move on. You're inability to admit you're wrong is not my problem.Oh, but it is. You are incapable of making an argument so you link to a bunch of garbage that does not refute a thing I have said. You DO NOT understand the concept of Church a State Separation much less argue about it. You can pretend all you want, but you haven't a clue. You are proving it. Why don't you just tell me what you think Church and State separation means? You are incapable of making an argument so you link to a bunch of garbage...A bunch of garbage? LOL Hardly. actually it was more like this... You are incapable of making an argument so you link to a bunch of garbage that does not refute a thing I have said. Insult me all you like it doesn't change anything. I find your ignorance and arrogance to be quite distasteful. Congratulations! You're the first person to make my ignore list. Please feel free to do the same. Thank you for sparing me the ignorance. However, I do not block comments. It is immoral in my view to deny thought where I am engaging. Don't misunderstand. I am glad you are blocking my comments. It will make it easier for people to follow the thread without all the busywork of having to explain through all the muck you provide in response to my clear thinking. Actually, it is one of the reasons I am so firm with idiots. It is my goal to be blocked, so you don't mess up the threads with your illogical rants. Interesting post and run Debbyski, All the arguments are made here. Despite your link to about.com. Please answer the question I posed to you on the link below. http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/00680395-CA97-4C43-ABF5-2031B8818D01/ You said The US is a Secular nation. That is an incredible statement. Please reread the thread and answer the question I posed to you. Why do you dodge a question, then continue to tout your misguided ideology after failing to make the case on a previous thread. It seems to me you cannot and when faced with facts, you leave one thread only to continue your misinformation on another. Pop for Willhelm's comments. Willhelm, You know what I said. I said the nation was founded on a secular document. Was the Constitution founded on a religious document? Hardly. I made all the arguments why I thought it was a secular document and you made all the arguments why you thought it was not a secular document. I didn't dodge any question and you know that. It is myAre you popping for these comments BitDrifter? Willhelm, there are many reasons that I expect more of you in the way of compassion than many of the other ... Debbyski, I do not call people idiot's because they hold different views from me. There are many people i believe to be idiots that agree with me. The level of one's agreement or disagreement with me is not what makes one an idiot. An intellectually dishonest person is one who's intellectual starting point, resources, and opinion are dependent on one another. An idiot is an intellectually dishonest person, that is not willing to, or cannot understand argument and simply just emotes. Further, your bias shows in the illogic of your thinking that because the Declaration of Independence is not a religious document, that makes it a secular document. That is called a compositional fallacy. Not to... Feelings make life sweet, but can be dangerous. Thinking makes life safe, but can be a bitter pill.Ah, we agree on something. Can we agree that you need to do more thinking and less feeling? If you will do more feeling and less thinking Can we agree that you need to do more thinking and less feeling? LOL! Debbyski, my wife would not agree that I need to do more feeling and less thinking. Otherwise, you would have a deal. |
