It's a hardy plant which can be grown in the most hostile of environments, including deserts, garbage dumps and rock piles, where food crops wouldn't stand a chance. It's a low-maintenance shrub, needing about 600 mm of water, but which can survive three years of drought by dropping its leaves.
</P><P> The seeds yield up to 37% oil content, and can be made into biodiesel virtually as it is. The jatropha bush can produce oil in its second year of growth, and has a lifespan of abut 50 years.
