Now you've gone and done it, kkc! I wasn't planning on ranting about tomatoes, but now I can't help myself. It's your own fault! . I am a sucker for growing tomatoes! I already have a lot of different species, some heirlooms too, and I have ordered the Black Russian seeds for next year, along with Eva Purple Ball and the Principe Borghese. (Now''s a good time to buy seeds, btw, at the end of the season they're real cheap.) I, of course, have all of the run-of-the-mill's like Geminis, Tiny Tim's, Cherrys etc, but if you want some really, really good, sweet and beautiful tomatoes, try the Golden Sunrise. OMG, they are the colour of a rising sun, orangy-yellow and each plant yields a... Btw, if you don't have canner (I don't) they are real easy to freeze. Just rinse them, cut out the stem and chuck them in the freezer, skin and all. When you need them, just take out the amount you need and hold them under hot water for a bit, and the skin slips right off and they're ready to use. It couldn't be easier. . TNCBT-- sadly I am no longer physically capable of gardening. When I was still working, one of the nurses in the X-ray dept would bring me some from her garden. They were the sweetest I ever had. The Farmers' market is better than the supermarket, but nothing like home grown. So now I spend my time inciting others to rant about tomatoes. Hey Kappy, I decided to do apple butter instead. I just don't seem to enjoy raw tomatoes as much as i used to, but i love a nice ripe tomato sliced up with some spices and cheese on top, and baked. Delicious! Btw, why does tomato have no e, but tomatoes does? |
