I am speechless. I was going to vote for Obama until I learned this. I simply can not vote for anyone who sells out our constitutional rights. I feel a little crushed right now (only a little, I am primarily an anarchist). I just wanted an eloquent, seemingly humanist, president for a change. but now I see my old belief still holds true; Obama is just another head of the same beast, all be it more literate and better dressed. This is beyond the pale! I guess I needed this to wake me from my romanticized stupor. I was swayed by his charisma but now see his true colors and they are not red, white and blue. The linked article summed it up best: "as a Constitutional Law Professor, he knows full well what a radical perversion of our Constitution this bill is, and yet he's supporting it anyway. Anyone who sugarcoats or justifies that is doing a real disservice to their claimed political values and to the truth. "

This is just coming out in the media. I'd wait to make sure all the facts are out before making a judgment call.

I recall a quote from Oliver Stone's movie 'Nixon' :

Nixon shuffles back alone, coming to a stop in front of a larger-than-life, full-length oil portrait of JOHN F. KENNEDY. Nixon studies the portrait, pads closer. Looks up.

NIXON

O.K. Wiccantexan, what you say is fair and reasonable. But I suggest you read some of Barak's quotes written on Greenwald's blog: http://utdocuments.blogspot.com/2008/06/statement-of-barack-obama-supporting.html Including this 'Trust me! I won't abuse this power' statement: “It is not all that I would want. But given the legitimate threats we face, providing effective intelligence collection tools with appropriate safeguards is too important to delay. So I support the compromise, but do so with a firm pledge that as President, I will carefully monitor the program, review the report by the Inspectors General, and work with the Congress to take any additional steps I deem necessary to protect ...

This is a little off topic, but I would suggest this article to everyone. It makes a comparison of these powers that were once "temporary" to the powers given Hitler in the 1930s. I think I might clip this as well.

I know when you bring up the Hitler comparisons people tend to knee-jerk react and tune out everything that comes after, but you are so spot on correct jmjoness. I like the way you phrased it: It makes a comparison of these powers that were once "temporary" to the powers given Hitler in the 1930s. It is EXACTLY the same march towards fascism as Germany succumbed to.

It really is. The similarities between 1930s Germany and 21st century America are frightening. And as the Germans blinded themselves to their own faults, so we are doing the same. If we don't open our eyes it will lead to our demise, to put it bluntly.
