Religious sectarianism versus social schisms. I think religion is in most cases the primal cause of the perception of "otherness". Consider the ubiquitous religious declaration that "our faith" is the one true faith. That is not an atmosphere to encourage cooperation and trust. Throw in active proselytizing by a minority sect and you have the makings for exactly what is happening in the clip.
