mmm I take your point, but I think you are wrong here. As I understand it most of the deaths are in young-middle aged healthy people. Healthcare workers are over represented. The pattern is similar to the 1918 pandemic that killed upwards of 20 million people world-wide, from 1billion infected.
This one has barely started yet. Serious pandemics will be an increasing reality and result directly from our policies of factory farming animals and routinely giving them antibiotics; widespread use of vaccinations; widespread use of antibiotics in humans. All these actions push bugs to become more virulent, and they have.
No doubt huge profits will be made by some; we`re a lovely species !!

Influenza of that time was consequence of First World War in Europe. Conditions of life for ordinary people were terrible; it is well described in numerous masterpieces of art and literature. In medieval times mortal pandemic of plague was started from rat infestation. Humankind got its lessons of hygiene and sanitary. More precisely, part of humankind. Those, who deemed themselves better than others. But mother nature (or is it God?) punish us for our ignorance and show us we are all alike and have take care of each other before it getting even worst. Flu epidemies in modern societies are the natural way of total immunization and even boosting immune system; they are harmless... Unless...
