enbar says: Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard gives a mostly positive assessment of the Bush presidency. I mostly disagree, but it's worth a read. He's vague on what he thinks the U.S.'s real goals in Iraq are, but he is confident Petraeus will achieve them. he better hope so. His fate and that of the other drumbeating neocons who got us into this mess hinge on this. This day and age people expect instant results. These things take time. Look at the Kurds. They were progressing and now they've been hit again. It's so frustrating. sam, the terrorists "got us into this mess." In case people don't feel like reading the whole article, here's a bullet-point summary of Kristol's argument.
No the terrorist did not get "us" into this mess, BushCo did. The U.S. had no business in invading Iraq, none whatsoever. If the wanted to transform a nation and show their good will Afghanistan was the place to do it. Now Iraq serves as a clarion call for fanatics while U.S allies languish in the forgotten battlefields of Afghanistan. Lets stick to the facts. As for William "the Bloody" Kristol, he will say anything to keep this war going, not matter whose blood, sweat and tears are shed (except his own of course). Foreign policy has been generally successful; we have good relationships with our allies and the global situation is mostly stableYou cannot be serious. No self-respecting leader would be seen in Bush's company. Only US-appointed corrupt or client leaders go the the US. Latin America is a disaster. How Europe and Africa feel about Russia and China is radically different now than pre-George. Only a dodo could believe that the US position is better now than before. As a seeker of world peace, this causes me most discomfort. I maybe innocently believed, pre-George, that one strong world power was best for world peace. I don't believe that America could ever be that again. ... SCOTUS appointees Alito and Roberts are great news for everybody In another 'are you kidding me' statement, Kristol says of iraq... we now seem to be on course to a successful outcome.Um, really? What can he possibly be basing this on other his need for it to be true? The domestic economy is thriving thanks to the tax cutsHousing foreclosures in the headlines and rising, middle-class dwindling fast. Yeah, I call that success, for the fat-cats who can't get enough. The Medicare drug benefit is a big successFor the drug companies. It has been predicted by some, though, to be a real economy breaker in the coming years. A single payer system would be SOOOOOO much better. But then the insurance deep-pockets crew couldn't fund BushCo. The deficit is not growing as fast as people said it wouldLet's just forget that there was NO deficit when he took office. There has been no second attack in the U.S.T... The domestic economy is thriving thanks to the tax cutsWhere have I heard this before? Oh, I remember, those smart folks over at Conservapedia. Though the liberal media continues to disparage Bush's handling of the economy, they often neglect to report the many aspects of the economy that Bush has improved. For example, during his term Exxon Mobil has posted the largest profit of any company in a single year, and executive salaries have greatly increased as well. Bill Kristol has lost his mind. Iraq successful....that would be funny if there weren't so many corpses involved. Kristol should really man up and sign up for service. Should this item's title not be something like 'Is Bill Kristol WRONG: "Why Bush will be a winner"'? This I can agree with although a bit of a double negative. After I commented here, I came across this, which I believe says it all so well after an initial lazy bit. The core misconceptions in the 'war on terror' At the international level, the administration rationalized the use of torture and rendition. ... At the geopolitical level, it broke international law by pursuing a preventive war against Iraq. It failed to capitalize on the international goodwill directed at Washington after September 11, 2001... more highlights from... The core misconceptions in the 'war on terror' A just counter-terrorism policy would shift the focus away from military solutions, which have done so little to improve the security of the United States .... The Chinese have a saying: before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. The US pursuit of vengeance, rather than justice, has been similarly self-defeating. Fear disables rational thinking. Since September 11, the United States has been kept in an artificially prolonged state of fear. The Bush administration has used this ... Al-Qaeda is a relatively recent phenomenon. Its concerns were originally quite specific - to compel the United States to withdraw its troops from Saudi Arabia. It was on the verge of extinction after the collapse of its patron, the Taliban, in Afghanistan in 2001. If approached with the appropriate legal mechanisms - and with the discriminate force associated with law enforcement undertaken with due respect for human rights - al-Qaeda will once again retreat into obscurity. In another decade, after appropriate counter-terrorism measures, the current "greatest threat to world peace" will likely be demoted in importance. Terrorism, after all, was at the top of Ronald Reagan's a... |
