The $1.42 trillion deficit is $162 billion less than the $1.58 trillion deficit projected by the U.S. Treasury in its August Mid-Session Review.<DIV id="continued"><DIV>But while the news could have been worse, the numbers are still pretty grim. <A href="http://www.bloomberg.com/markets/ecalendar/index.html">Economists surveyed</A> by Bloomberg News had expected the U.S. to post a $31 billion deficit in September.
