kmcolo says: Thoughts on the federal ban on off shore drilling? I too wonder if it is not time to rethink this ban that was put into place by Bush Jr.'s father. Listening to NPR it was pointed out that the oil companies already have concessions to drill on 60 million acres of federal land that they haven't drilled on yet. I agreed with the NPR guest that they should drill on that land before they start pushing for legislative changes during periods of crisis when people can react on emotion more than reason. Isn't it time to abandon oil and develop renewable resources? It is most certainly time to abandon oil - but we will need time to abandon oil as cold turkey will not work. I agree with you that this is a bad time to make this decision. One could consider this as duress - but the oil offshore may well be easier to extract than that already available on land. In the end, if there is drilling offshore, I'd like to see the feds pull in _real_ money for the leases rather than virtually give it away like they have in the past. That certainly wont happen under this president. We should also remember that it is not due to the offshore ban, to ANWR, or to environmentalists that oil is so pricey. Despite years of record profits the oil companies did not ... I prefer Webb to make a stand, even if it is one I strongly disagree with, than try to go flippity-flop on it. Webb is certainly no Lieberman. I like Webb. Great interview with him on fresh air recently. I'll post a clip soon. |
