Aribeth says:
>> Alexander the Great never lost a battle, not to the Persians or to anyone else. But he did order his men shaved so that their beards could not be grabbed in battle. Same for the Romans.

Yet you find many men who support a beard and I am sure there are a variety of reasons for that too, but I am not getting into that right now. I must admit though that a beard or a moustache alone on some men look very graceful.

Now its your turn to talk, why do you shave guys? <<

I've had a beard since National Service. If nothing else, national service taught me to dislike shaving. Many men grow beards to cover a small chin, others shape them, play games with the style ( maybe vanity comes in here) and others don't see the need. I never wore a warming device around my neck, but my wife does. She hasn't got a beard though.

I've a beard because I'm too lazy to shave.

I was mouse with some Celtic red. When some turned silvery grey I decided to keep my odd tri-coloured beard. It looks best when short.

I read somewhere, that before going into battle, the Ancient Britons would shave their bodies completely except for facial hair to make their appearance more fearsome.

I think being hot and itchy is a pretty good reason. If I didn't have such an unattractive shaped skull, I would shave my head.

I have a beard since 1984 and never shave, just trim it once in ten days or so. The only interruption was my 60-days military service in 1994 when I had to shave every morning (and hated it.) I really feel very sorry for Alexander's soldiers (and those troops in Roman legions.)

I have beard because: 1. I'm lazy to shave like Righthand. 2. It looks good on me, at least most friends have been saying so.

Society has allowed that a "clean cut" man is more professional. Advertisements show that a smooth face is "sexy" and women like a clean shaved man. Its how society views beards in America.

Electric shavers: Do me a favour, they're awful. They burn and they hack and they pinch. I have a beard 16yrs old. I shave around it once a week as well as keeping it tidy and in good shape No point in having something that everyone else has. Cold steel, sharp blade . . . the craftsman's way.
@invictus. POP but for different reasons.
@btyler. Tosh. I've seen some fantastic beards in America. The reality behind the image is the important thing, not the image.

My first husband grew a beard after he recovered from loosing all of his hair following chemotherapy ... and never shaved again! He let the hair on his head grow long too. He wore it in a pony tail.
My second husband told me this the day we married ... "Two things you can never ask me to do, because I won't do them ... to stop drinking beer ... and to shave my mustache!" He had a large mole on his upper lip that he was self-conscious about that the mustache hid. The beer drinking ... don't ask!

I had always thought that being lazy and not wanting to shave was why most men grew beards ... and invictus and righthand just confirmed it for me.

Many men grow beards to cover a s...

Well, as my girlfriend keeps reminding me... cornfields aren't the only places where stubble burns....

Hence, me being nice and clean shaven!

Laziness here too.
Regarding stubble and women: I can be clean shaven or bearded long enough for it to be soft. Short and prickly, though I like it because it's so easy to keep clean, just, well, doesn't allow some options that I'd rather not do without.

Theory:

1. Ancient Roman and Greek civilization did not have anything against the practice of homosexual love. As men aged, they shaved in order to appear younger and more desirable to other men.

2. Rome conquered Great Britain and became the "higher elite" there. As Rome lost power, it withdrew from Britain.

3. The British who remained in their country, now associating being clean-shaved with the higher social class, as did other European countries, also started to shave.

4. Europeans colonized the U.S. and the practice of shaving was brought over here.

Maybe.

Beard (neatly trimmed) and moustache since high school. Started to shave when facial hair started growing...and started to break out. Went to dermatologist. Dermatologist said "don't shave".

Never had a girlfriend who didn't like either.

When I left to go to Hawaii, the last time my Mom saw me for 5 yrs and I grew a beard long enough to braid--When I went back for a visit she didn't recognize me (at first) when I got off the plane... what a trip! I hate shavin'-- all that pain and wasted time when I could be sleepin'....

Your theory is interesting. However, I've never seen any picture or portrayal of a shaved Native American; they were there long before Europeans.

I think I read somewhere, some native races didn't develop facial hair. Indians, Aussie Aboriginals, and Africans etc. (Do the Japanese have facial hair?)
Combinations with (I guess European) facial hair genes has put a bit hair on their faces today though.

I like a nice beard and moustache. (Rodent free). Short stubble feels like sandpaper. Ouch!

Good friend of mine, when I was in college, is full-blooded Cherokee. He couldn't grow facial hair to save his life. American Indians didn't need to shave; genetics.

" I think being hot and itchy is a pretty good reason."
There have actually been some scientific studies that show a beard grows faster in hot climates. After studying the probable reasons for this, what the scientists found was a beard actually cools the wearer better than not having one. It seems that moisture (sweat) gets into the beard and a breeze blowing through it makes into a natural kind of "evaporative water air-cooler."

I live in Texas, and I'll tell what, it get damn hot around in the summer, and I've had a beard since 1975, and it's never bothered me because of the heat.

@boniface: Thanks for that comment. It answers why I've never seen a bearded American Indian.

A mate, who rolls his own cigarettes, refuses to shave because he once had to use his last rolly paper to stem the bleeding.

This is a good article, but what I really wanted to know is why we grow beards in the first place. I understand that in colder climates men grew beards as a way to keep warm and to appear bigger to scare of would be predators. And this goes for other bodily hair.

Question if the beard was used for warmth, why is it not common for women to grow beards? And why is it that men in warmer climates also grew beards.

Will modern day man, evolve in to a hairless species?

Sadly guys have been warped by our society and shaving the face naked has become the norm. We must educate ourselves about facial hair and not give up so easily.
