An old article from 2003, but very thought-provoking! Now, I'm no Catholic, but if Pope John Paul ll (rest in peace) had such concerns about the "goodness" of Mr George W. Bush, then I sit up and listen. Are there any Catholics out there who know what the Church's or the current Pope's stand on this issue is now?

If I believed in such things, I would have to side with the Pope.

I lose even more faith in the Pope from these types of statements. There are well-know things that have to happen before the Anti-Christ hits the scene. The Pope above all others should be well aware of this. To even allow a statement like that to surface disgraces his knowledge in the Lord.

He was! After 9/11 and his vow to get the enemy at all costs and fight the "evli-doers" he was hero of the day and the US was showered with world sympathy and everyone was behind him. The phophesy also says, I think, that the Anti-Christ will claim to be a peace bringer. That fits well with GWB's bullshit agenda of bringing "freedom and democracy" to Iraq.for example. But I'm not a Bible jockey, so I have to read up on all this to get a clearer picture of who or what the Anti-Christ is supposed to be, but in a layman's opinion, GWB isn't far off the *mark*. No pun intended. .

Is George W. Bush the Antichist? No. Our understanding of Revelation is complicated by the fact that the apocalypse as a literary form does not exist in our time. However, John's original readers knew very well what John was talking about.

Speaking as someone who was raised Catholic, I should point out that, at least in the catechistics presented to the laity, RC doctrine gives short shrift to the Revelation and the AntiChrist, and doesn't even mention the rapture. Perhaps these topics are hotly debated in the drafty halls of the theologians, but they're not part of the publicly discussed doctrines. I find it rather dubious that a pope would make any quotable statement speculating on the identity of the AntiChrist.

I'm with TRN on this one ... I have a hard time believing that JPII would have seriously considered this idea. The outside "source" TNCBT cites is actually just some other journalist who quotes Madsen (the author of this Counterpunch article) saying that unnamed "sources close to the pope" have made these claims. Not that I don't think Bush is scary and dangerous ... but ... still.

Well, the Anti-Christ is said to be the prince of lies so that kinda fits. Also, as for recovering from a fatal accident, didn't Bush jr. choke on a pretzel ? Maybe he died and resurrected. He's also fallen off his bike a few times and I seem to remember he got eaten by a shark although I'm not positive

Actually, from what I've been taught in the Catholic church is that the number of the beast my not actually be 666. It is believed that this was messed up somewhere in the translation from Hebrew to Greek to Latin to whatever language. It may actually be 6 to the 6th power to the 6th power, or
