BigBadWolf says: I would love to hear from some of you what you think about this. I think the laws are antiquated considering how mature a 15year old is in this day and age. I was 15 once...11 years ago...and sex was definitely the farthest thing from my mind. All I was thinking about was my next camping trip, O-levels, finishing my homework and getting a decent GPA. Don't kids these days have school to worry about? SATs/O or A levels/Prelims/Highers/IBs/APs and all that stuff for university? How do they find time to party? I've always been baffled by the fact that statutory laws don't include an age difference clause. If a 15 and 15 year old fool around, no problem, but 15 and 17 and it's a crime worthy of ruining someone's life over? Mind boggling, unfair, and saddening. this is absurd... the sentence doesn't actually address the problem at hand: the fact that the 15 year old girl made a bad decision. (i'm thinkin' she should address her need to go around a high school party and service the multiple guys there.) ten years in prison is an outrageous sentence for a 17 year old who also showed poor judgement, but ultimately, did not coerce her into doing anything (hence, not becoming a sex offender who preys on others). i agree with ericskiff that the laws are baffling... sounds like these people may need better parenting (who knows) and better judgment skills, but prison should be saved for violent offenders, as far as i'm concerned. I have no idea how this could possibly be his fault or fall under statutory rape laws, but then again theres that law where the girl has her socks off its statutory rape so i don't know... read: CBC.ca:Reports shed light on teen sex also: Teens view oral sex as safer choice: study Personally I think this judgment and the whole trial, calling these guys sexual offenders, etc is retarded. Sooner or later people re going to have to take their heads out of their asses and realize that kids ARE sexually active and have been for a long time now. The girl was 15. the guy was 17.. that's a 2 year difference, and not the same as a 23 year old getting oral sex from a 15 year old. As kali stated, I think the real question is why did t... Having a 16 year old daughter, I'm a bit concerned with the "kids will be kids" attitude several people have commented on. Morality is all about parenting. Unfortunately, that too goes out the window when kids choose to party, do drugs and drink. Actually, on the flip side, this sentence (if it gets wider publicity) may end up curbing the acts many kids. Oral sex among kids have gone out of hand in America if we were to believe these media reports and studies. Kids don't think oral sex is sex. A U.S. President told them so. I've heard them say that! Actually, on the flip side, this sentence (if it gets wider publicity) may end up curbing the acts many kids.Ahh.. yeah.. just like they might go to jail if they get caught drinking under age.. or smoking, or.. or... It's not that kids will be kids, but rather that kids are humans, and because that they are they will do the things humans do. Humans have not only a sexual urge but a sensual need to feed to feel fulfillment if they are to be whole and well-rounded individuals. No matter the desire to the contrary of any adult individual or group, as young teens age they begin to mature and experience mature desires and urges. Repression of the healthy expression of these desires is as perverse as the wholesale exploitation of them, IMHO, be that exploitation in child-porn, or the use of these powerful emotions to make well-bred consumers out of them. Adults need to come to grips with their own hang-ups, ... I don't think this has anything to do with reality, and I don't think people are taking a "kids will be kids" attitude. It's just that the sentence is excessive. The punishment does NOT fit the crime. It would have made more sense to me to put the girls' parents in jail for 30 days for not raising her better - what is a 15-year old doing servicing young men at a party? That is sick! But 10 years in jail for participating with a bunch of other guys, or being called a sex offender for life because of a consensual act between two teenagers - sounds like something out of Afghanistan or someplace to me!! I have two daughters myself, 13 and 16. I have no grand illusions that I can stop them from pursuing their sexual desires. The best I can do as a parent is TRY to instill in them good values. HOWEVER (<- a big however) kids being humans (as so well put above) they will do what they want anyway. Some of the most promiscuous girls I dated were those that were raised in a sheltered or strict manner. I give my daughters a speech almost monthly saying "I can't stop you from doing it but..." Anyway, IMHO oral sex is a WAY better choice then intercourse. And, oral between a 15 and 17 year old is not something a kid should be going to jail for. "Under Georgia law at the time, this was considered aggravated child molestation, a felony for teens less than three years apart to have oral sex. It carried with it a 10-year sentence, even though it was only a misdemeanor for those same teens to have sexual intercourse." The problem here is definitely idiocy in Georgia law. from Scott Adams Blog... Power to the Sheeple The New York Times had a fascinating article about a study of herd instinct. It turns out that people prefer whatever they think other people like. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/15/magazine/15wwlnidealab.t.html?pagewanted=2&ei=5124&en=79be2f770fc76c6d&ex=1334203200 Meanwhile, another study showed that the U.S. program of telling kids to stop having sex has been a dismal failure so far. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070416/us_nm/sex_abstinence_dc Apparently the following message is not effective: “Everyone LOVES sex. I love, it. All the other teachers love it. Your older friends love it. We all do it whenever we can because it’s frickin’ GRE... Damn, does America have to be so uptight? If the court was Hispanic (and this is coming from a Puerto Rican) this wouldn't even be looked at. There's literally 13 years old girls in bklyn that have a child. Do I advocate this? No. But let's not lock a kid in jail for sex. If puberty starts at age 12 for most of the youth, why should the system jail a kid that's just going along with his natural hormones? I was 12 and my first sex was from a generous girl of 19. My cousin recommended her. It was absolutely divine - snuck up to her bedroom when her parents were gone to work on Sat mornings. She would leave her door unlocked and be in bed waiting for me. I would take my bicycle and leave it in the bushes. How I looked forward to Saturday mornings. I told nobody. A nosy neighbor across the street recognized me from boy scouts and called my mom. My mom drove over and parked in the street in front. Mortified, I got my clothes on and waited for her to drive away, then rushing with my bike all the back ways home. Parents met with her parents and they all decided I shouldn't see her anymor... From the BBC News web-site, Tues, 12 JUN 07: A US judge in Georgia has overturned a ruling in which a 17-year-old man was imprisoned for 10 years for having consensual oral sex with a teenager. |
