masbury says: future of journalism at stake Masbury, what is your opinion of the internet providing the new journalism? Sometimes I am watching national TV news and find myself remarking, "geez I heard about that days ago on the internet". BR, I wish I had an answer! I, too, get far more news on the web than on TV. But I see two challenges: 1) It's awfully hard for most people to qualify their sources, so lots of folks end up believing things that are distorted or untrue (Rush Limbaugh being a huge non-web example), and 2) TV, I think, has greater penetration - thus, greater impact - on Americans. I think I read, in fact, that people most likely to understand current events were people who watched The Daily Show! Here's one more: millions of Americans - perhaps a majority - don't read well enough to enjoy it. So print-based web news has some limits, and video web news is limited, for the moment, by the limits of high-spe... I was thinking some of the very things you pointed out. Some of the internet sources lack the training and funds to conduct investigative reporting. Having said that however, some sources are very informative because they interview experts (e.g. authors, professors, topical experts, intelligence professionals, ....etc.). But as you pointed out, we are now able to find the news that supports our opinion, so is it truly news? TV does have greater impact if it is a news program that is being watched. With the proliferation of cable and satellite network channels no one is obligated to watch a news program. What us middle agers considered the news (Walter Cronkite Evening News) seems so limited... Thanks - indeed, candidates are everywhere, the phone rings many times a day, the mailbox has at least one mailing every day (today it had several) and ad after ad plays on TV. At least two Obama volunteers have come by door-knocking - none, though, from anyone else. Weather forecast is for cold but no new snow; crowds should be large, which, I think, benefits Hillary. I'm going to support Obama. Their staff person phoned to say the most important things were: 1) be there before 6:30, and 2) go to the Obama corner and don't leave it! Sure will be intriguing to see if the polls bear any resemblance to what happens. |
