On 30 September 2007, a dormant volcano erupted on the Red Sea island Jabal al-Tair, causing some loss of life and damage to a military base. The N.R.P. Álvares Cabral, a Portuguese Navy Frigate, part of the SNMG1, was the first ship belonging to the NATO maritime group to spot the eruption. The ship and Sonic, the helicopter aboard the NRP Alvares Cabral, were the first to arrive and assist the Yemenite authorities in the search and rescue atempts. |
