Godfrey Daniel says: Click the second Visit Page link for video. I imagine so, indeed. Frightening. And all avoidable had they just not been bound by their own PC multiculturalism foolishness early on. Who is' they'? British gov There is also the issue, of course, of actions such as attacking Iraq and Afghanistan, and how they can fuel extremism for a number of obvious reasons. If history is to tell us anything, it might be that. I don't agree that trying to embrace other cultures is a Bad Thing. I think it's a very progressive and important move for the British government and many others. "Embracing culture" can be a wonderful thing. Multiculturalism that is suicidal is quite a different matter. Where is the line between 'embracing culture' and 'multiculturalism'? Is there a line or are the two not really one in the same? I don't think it's realistic to say, 'we'll accept and embrace your culture, but we won't actuall be multicultural'. I mean that there are elements of the cultures of the countries left by immigrants that greatly enrich the culture of their new home, but there are likewise those which cannot be reconciled with the culture of that new home. It is incumbent on the immigrant to adapt, respect, and become, and not the other way around. If this is not possible or is unacceptable to the immigrant then he should return to his cultural home. It is extreme arrogance on the part of the immigrant to disrespect those who have taken him in by seeking to impose his cultural values, and foolish and suicidal of any nation to allow the culture of the immigrant to displace its own. Ok. Thanks for your response - I see what you mean now. ...a rare moment Just butting in....but to me, America has always been 'multicultural' and only recently has it moved to include attitudes and tolerance that is dangerous to our whole society. We've always been a land of immigrants and I was always taught to have respect for people who were different from me. There has always been cultural "communities" within our local ones that added a special flavor. What happened? What you're describing as positive is not multicultural ism. The difference now is that in past all those with various sub culture identities and diets and customs, considered themselves firstly Americans, and as foremost a part of that uniting oneness that made the US such a bold and wonderful experiment. Multiculturalism is regression to tribalism; the replacement of one identity with many flavors with many, as though the fire's gone out under the melting pot. The Left call it progressive but it's very old school. ...a rare momentAnother endlessly helpful and uself comment from GD there. Christ. good grief, Anon, I guess you took that personally. It was intended as a bit of self-deprecating humor. You sometimes get my humor, which is why I thought it a safe bet. By the way, I thought you were an atheist. ...well, not entirely humor. It was just refreshing to clarify something and have the response be as yours. It, in reality was a rare moment, and appreciated. |
