masbury says: Surely not ... I regretted my sobriety after last night's game... heavy sigh. Oh well, there's always next ye... I mean, tonight! Even by pure random selection, it should be their turn. dulios, if I still lived in Chicago, I'd be mightily torn, but I'm back in hometown Milwaukee, and that puts us on opposite sides of the NL fence. Well, Jorjor, as a life-long Cubs fan, I save my most potent hate for the Mets (a pain older than me) and the Cardinals. I mean, I hold no love for your Brewers, but it will take a couple more years for that to fester into all-consuming hatred. dulios, I grew up in Milwaukee, bounced around the country for a bit (Lake Geneva, Connecticut, Minnesota) and finally ended up in Chicago. After my wife died, I came back to Milwaukee. When the Brewers were AL, the Cubs were always my #1 NL team. When I lived in CT, I went to Shea to see the Cubs play the Mets several times, and wore my Brewers jersey so I could be a stealth Cubs fan (you do NOT want to root for the visitors in NYC or Boston). My supreme hatred is reserved for the Cardinals, primarily because of 1982. For 26 years, I have personally boycotted all Anheiser-Busch products - not a drop of Bud or Michelob has passed my lips in all that time. The best out-of-town fans I eve... My supreme hatred is reserved for the CardinalsThen let us raise a drink to their sorry asses sitting at home tonight! And that's a cool story about Toronto! I've never been to Canada... though if McCain steals this election I might end up there. They sound like lovely people! Cripes, that wouldn't happen in any other ballpark, would it! Oh God... we lost again... this isn't fun... maybe we are better as lovable losers sittin' at home in October... le sigh. The Cubs and the Brewers are both behind the eight ball. The prospects for a freeway playoff don't look good. Back in '82, the Brewers became the first team in history to come back from a 0-2 deficit to win a best of five league championship against the (then) California Angels. That will forever stand, because the league championships became a best of seven when they went from two to three divisions per league in '98 (that was the year the Brewers switched from AL to NL). Come Saturday, I'll have to lay in a supply of beer (not Busch, of course) to either celebrate with or cry into. If the Brew Crew fades and the Cubs hang on, I'll be with them all the way. Same with me for the Brewers, Jorjor. My father taught me well that if your team loses, then you root for your division, or you root for your league. The thought of cheering for the Dodgers? The Phillies? Nope. Let's at least keep it the Midwest, huh? I'm still pretty bummed today, though. I swear, 3 infield errors in one inning? Is my team throwing this series? Oh, the pain, the pain! Curse my father and his father for raising me a Cubs fan! Ah, how satisfying! I don't care much for basefall myself, but I had a hunch this clip would make for lots of enjoyable reading. I guess I like baseball fans! Thanks! dulios, think of Cubs fandom as being a high and noble calling, given over to the exquisite pain and suffering once reserved for holy martyrs. I'm a little flexible when it comes to league and division loyalty, though. If the Cardinals are involved, I don't much care who the other team is as long as they set the birds' tail feathers on fire. If it comes down to the White Sox against the Phillies or the Dodgers, I'll be strongly tempted to stay regional and cheer them on against the team that kept Our Guys out of the Series. There is, of course, a slim chance of a Chicago subway Series - in that case, whoever wins, the turmoil will make Katrina look like a sneeze. masbury, think of baseb... I'm sure you're right. Perhaps that's why I enjoy fans' comments so much - that whimsical sense of community. I was in a "tube" station, descending a long escalator into the bowels of the earth under London once - in a throng, after dark, with my son, who was then 14. As we got off at the bottom, from a knot of people cave-dwellers along one wall came a shout - "AAAy, White Sox!" Lucas was wearing his White Sox hat. Fellow midwesterners, obviously. Well, dulios, it looks like both our teams are out of it now. I can only console myself with the fact that the Brewers took one game and didn't just roll over and die. "Brewers" is certainly a perfect name for a baseball team. What other sport requires beer for proper appreciation? dulios, this from QT in the Sun-Times: News Item: Chinese government warns Nobel Committee that it should ''choose the right person'' for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, a reference to China's displeasure at the list of finalists including jailed dissidents Hu Jia and Gao Zhisheng. OK. The Sox and the Cubs gone, but there are still a couple of guys out there we can root for. Take heart. There's always '09. Take heart. There's always '09.I certainly will. Heavy sigh. |
