I believe that this was designed to raise the level of instability in the region; perhaps to dissuade the President from going to the region. Personally, I wish he wasn't going. There is nothing to be gained; especially not within the Palestinian/Israeli *peace plan*.

Frankly it was a little reminiscent of the USS Cole incident.
